How are dividends taxed?

Prior to 6 April 2016, shareholders received a 10% 'tax credit' on any dividends they received. This was due to the fact that companies pay dividends out of profits on which they have already paid (or are due to pay) corporation tax. The tax credit took account of the fact that 10% corporation tax had already been paid.

The tax credit was available to shareholders to offset against any UK income tax that might be due on their dividend income. From 6 April 2016, the UK Government introduced a reform to the taxation of dividends. The dividend tax credit was abolished and a tax free dividend allowance was introduced.

All shareholders receive a dividend confirmation whenever dividends are paid which contains information to assist them in completing their tax assessments.

You should seek your own independent advice or refer to the HMRC website to understand how these arrangements apply to you.
