On Saturday 22 June, the 2019 Post Office Retail Awards saw more than 150 top performers being recognised in a special awards night hosted by Tess Daly to celebrate their success.
That included McColl's Portishead who received the final award of the night, the Local Hero Award, after saving the life of a vulnerable customer.
Carol Worgan, Post Office Counter Manager, received a standing ovation as she was presented the award on behalf of the team by Post Office Interim Chief Executive, Al Cameron.
In January this year, Carol and her team had become concerned when they hadn't seen 89 year old Lajos for a few days, and he hadn't been in to collect his pension. They reported their concerns to the police who were able to visit the customer at his address and discovered him behind his bedroom door, in urgent need of medical treatment. He was barely conscious, extremely dehydrated and freezing cold. The ambulance crew said that if it had been another 12 to 24 hours, he wouldn't be alive, but thanks to the actions of the team at McColl's Portishead and the local Police Community Support Workers he received the medical care he needed to save his life.
I was very proud to attend the Post Office Awards and receive the Local Hero Award on behalf of Team Portishead. Due to the fast actions of my team and myself, local resident and customer Lajos is now home and recovering after a long stay in hospital. He is receiving the care he needs daily"Carol Worgan, Post Office Counter Manager
